Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, Southern Serengeti Border — Legendary Expeditions
This Legendary Expeditions lodge sits perched on massive stone boulders above the Arugusinyai River gorge. It lies within the privately managed Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, bordering the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems. The reserve covers roughly 129,530 acres and holds over 30 freshwater springs. As a result, it operates as an exclusive-use protected area, sharing its space with only a handful of guests at any one time.
Location and Landscape
Because the land is private rather than national park, Mwiba Lodge permits activities the park itself restricts. These include, for example, off-road driving, guided night drives, and a level of access unavailable inside the Serengeti boundary. The reserve also marks the southernmost point of the wildebeest migration’s loop. Herds spread across the area to calve between January and March. Resident wildlife, in addition, sustains strong game viewing throughout the rest of the year — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and a healthy rhino population all live here.
Accommodation
The lodge comprises ten luxury tented suites, each connected to the main area by raised wooden walkways. Every suite has a private deck, a king or twin bed configuration, and a soaking tub with copper fittings. Both indoor and outdoor showers, in turn, complete the bathroom. Two pairs of suites can interconnect for families or small groups. The central lodge area includes an open-air lounge and dining space with a fireplace, a well-stocked bar, a library, a spa, a gym, and an infinity pool overlooking the gorge.
Safari Experience
Every booking includes a privately allocated vehicle and guide. This gives genuine flexibility across unlimited game drives, day and night, within the reserve. Depending on conditions, guests can also reach the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Guided bush walks, fly-camping, and scenic helicopter flights, in addition, are all part of the standard Mwiba experience. Cultural visits with the Hadzabe, Datoga, Sukuma and Maasai communities, finally, round out the activity list.
When to Visit
January through March brings the calving season directly to the reserve’s southern reaches. This is a particular highlight, given the area’s position at the migration’s southernmost extent. Outside this window, however, Mwiba’s resident wildlife and private-reserve access continue to deliver strong, low-density game viewing throughout the year.
Practical Information
Scheduled and private charters from Arusha, in fact, serve the Mwiba airstrip, with a short 15-minute drive to the lodge. From Ngorongoro Crater, the drive takes roughly three hours.
Combining Mwiba Lodge with Other Tanzania Destinations
Mwiba works particularly well combined with a stay inside the Serengeti National Park itself. This pairs the reserve’s exclusivity and activity flexibility with the park’s broader range of landscapes. Ngorongoro Crater, similarly, extends naturally into a wider northern Tanzania circuit.
