Northern Serengeti, Near Lobo Airstrip — Government-Operated
Lobo Wildlife Lodge sits on a dramatic rock outcrop in the northern Serengeti. The Kenyan border lies roughly 28 kilometres away, with the Lobo airstrip a short drive from the lodge itself. Built in the late 1960s, the lodge has stayed largely unchanged since. Stone walls and timber beams follow the natural contours of the rock rather than imposing on it.
The lodge sits on the migration’s earliest northern route. As a result, herds moving toward the Mara River often pass close by between July and October. This gives Lobo one of the more elevated, panoramic vantage points over that stretch of the migration anywhere in the park.
Location and Landscape
A waterhole sits directly below the lodge, drawing wildlife throughout the day and into the evening. Hartebeest, buffalo and elephant are regularly visible from the terrace alone. Because the lodge sits on the early stage of the migration’s route, guests here often see herds passing through before reaching the busier crossing points further north.
Accommodation
Roughly 75 rooms spread across several stone blocks, connected by long open-sided corridors. Worth being direct here, in keeping with how we approach every property on this site: the rooms themselves are dated. Several reviewers describe worn floors, basic fittings and a style that hasn’t changed meaningfully since the original 1968 construction. Limited electricity hours and patchy Wi-Fi are also commonly mentioned. None of this should overshadow what the lodge does well, however. The setting, the views and the genuinely spectacular cliffside pool remain a clear draw regardless of room finish.
Safari Experience
Game drives explore the surrounding plains in open 4×4 vehicles. The migration’s northern route sits within easy reach during the relevant season. Guided walking safaris are also available, led by armed guides familiar with the area’s smaller details. These include animal tracks, medicinal plants, and the birdlife that open kopje terrain supports particularly well. The cliffside swimming pool, perched at the rock’s edge, offers uninterrupted views over the plains. It counts among the more memorable pool settings anywhere in the Serengeti.
When to Visit
July through October brings the migration’s northern route within reach of camp. This is the most rewarding window for witnessing herds in this area. Outside this period, however, the waterhole below the lodge continues to draw resident wildlife throughout the year.
Practical Information
Lobo Wildlife Lodge sits less than ten minutes from the Lobo airstrip. Seronera, in central Serengeti, lies roughly 80 kilometres away. By road from Arusha, the drive runs six to seven hours, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area along the way. Children are welcome, with no specific age restriction. However, parents should supervise closely, given the open, unfenced terrain around the rocks.
