Mkombe’s House
Kogakuria Kopje, Northern Serengeti — Nomad Tanzania
Mkombe’s House sits within the same Kogakuria Kopje as Lamai Serengeti, in the northern Serengeti close to the Mara River. Nomad named the house after Mkombe Mniko, one of the company’s co-founders. He spent his career connecting visitors, and especially children, with this part of the park. That focus on family runs through every detail of the house, from its room layout to its activity programme.
Because Mkombe’s House operates on a sole-use basis, families effectively get the entire property and a dedicated team to themselves.
Location and Landscape
The Great Migration’s wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River within reach of the house between July and October. This is a genuine highlight for families visiting during that window. Beyond the migration, resident game stays strong throughout the rest of the year. Plains game, lion and elusive leopard are all regularly sighted in the surrounding kopjes and riverine bush.
Accommodation
The house sleeps up to ten guests, ideally four adults and six children, across four bedrooms. Two open-fronted double or twin rooms suit adults, each with its own veranda and en-suite bathroom. Two further enclosed bedrooms sit nearby, designed specifically for younger children. These also have their own en-suite bathrooms and a deep tub for bath time. Groups of six to eight adults can also use the house, though the rear rooms run smaller and more enclosed than the main two.
A private dining room and lounge anchor the main living space, alongside a plunge pool and a larger swimming pool, both looking out over the northern Serengeti.
Safari Experience
A dedicated in-house chef plans meals daily with the group, drawing on fresh, local produce. This offers genuine flexibility for different tastes and dietary needs. A snug with a projector handles film screenings for quieter evenings. A star bed, in addition, lets guests sleep outside under the open sky on a clear night, serenaded by the sounds of the surrounding bush.
High chairs, car seats, cots and baby baths are all available, alongside child minders for parents wanting a few hours to themselves. Children of all ages are welcome. The rocky kopje surrounding the house, meanwhile, gives younger guests plenty to explore, including the resident lizards and hyrax that live among the boulders.
When to Visit
July through October brings the Mara River crossings directly within reach of the house, the clearest highlight of the year for families. Resident wildlife sustains strong viewing throughout the rest of the year. The house typically closes between April and May, worth checking before booking outside the main season.
Practical Information
Guests reach Mkombe’s House via the Kogatende airstrip, roughly a 30-minute drive from camp. Children of all ages are welcome. The house, finally, operates on a sole-use basis, for one family or group at a time.
Combining Mkombe’s House with Other Tanzania Destinations
Mkombe’s House sits within the same Kogakuria Kopje as Lamai Serengeti and Lamai Private. This makes it easy to combine with either for a wider family or group itinerary.
