Singita Explore

Singita Explore

Western Grumeti Reserve, Serengeti — Singita

Singita Explore sits deep in the western reaches of the Singita Grumeti Reserve, reached by a long drive past the other Grumeti properties along winding dirt and gravel roads. Camouflaged among a stand of trees on the open plains, this is Singita’s most pared-back camp — a primal, private experience built specifically to draw guests as close as possible to the surrounding wilderness, with comfort kept deliberately close to camping rather than to conventional lodge luxury.

The camp’s daily rhythm follows the landscape rather than a fixed schedule: wind cools, heat pushes guests toward shade, and nights bring fire, blankets and the sound of wildlife from the surrounding dark.

Location and Landscape

Explore’s remote position within the western Grumeti concession keeps it deliberately distant from the reserve’s other properties and from any meaningful vehicle traffic. The surrounding plains form part of the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, rich in both resident and migratory wildlife across the year.

Accommodation

Explore comprises two private camps, each with six one-bedroom tents. Two of these tents can be configured for families, or the extra space repurposed for wellness treatments and fitness activities. Comfort here is intentionally minimal — a cosy bed and a warm bucket shower rather than plunge pools or elaborate suites — described by Singita as excellence without modern excess.

The camp is solar-powered, allowing guests to charge devices, and Wi-Fi is available throughout, though the camp actively encourages guests to disconnect and engage with the surrounding landscape instead.

Safari Experience

A private vehicle and a small, dedicated team guide every aspect of an Explore stay, with daily game drives, guided bush walks (for children 16 and older), and hot air ballooning among the core activities. Meals are simple, seasonal and nourishing, cooked over open flame and eaten fireside or in the main tent rather than in a conventional dining room.

Stargazing, birdwatching, local board games, intimate wine tastings, cooking classes, and guided meditation and yoga sessions round out the experience, alongside opportunities for shared learning and conversation around the fire each evening. A community visit, led by the Grumeti Fund, gives guests direct exposure to the conservation and development work supporting the wider reserve.

When to Visit

Singita Grumeti’s equatorial climate stays fairly constant year-round. The Green Season, from November to May, brings long warm days with short downpours and transforms the reserve into lush grassland. June to October is the traditional migration season, with warm, dry, sunny conditions as the herds move through the wider ecosystem.

Practical Information

Singita arranges both scheduled flights and private charters into the Sasakwa airstrip within the Grumeti Reserve, followed by a longer drive into the western reaches of the concession to reach Explore. Children of all ages are welcome, though participation in game activities is at the discretion of the guide for safety reasons, and bush walks require children to be 16 or older.

As with Singita’s other Grumeti properties, the surrounding area carries malaria risk, and guests should consult a medical practitioner regarding antimalarial requirements and current vaccination guidance ahead of travel.

Combining Singita Explore with Other Tanzania Destinations

Explore sits within the same Grumeti concession as Singita’s other Serengeti properties — Sasakwa Lodge, Faru Faru Lodge, Sabora Tented Camp and Serengeti House — and pairs naturally with a stay at one of the more conventional lodges for travellers wanting both comfort and a deliberately stripped-back contrast within the same trip. Beyond the reserve, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire both extend naturally into a wider northern Tanzania circuit, and Zanzibar offers a coastal close to the journey.
