Singita Sasakwa Lodge sits on Sasakwa Hill, built in the style of a stately Edwardian manor house within the 350,000-acre Singita Grumeti Reserve in the Serengeti’s western corridor. From its elevated position, the lodge’s veranda looks out across the Serengeti plains to a distant horizon, with the migration’s pathways visible from the same vantage point that has drawn comparisons to a grand English country estate set down in East Africa.
The reserve operates as private land within the greater Serengeti ecosystem, which allows activities — including guided walking safaris and a tailored range of leisure pursuits from tennis to horseback riding — that the national park itself does not permit.
Location and Landscape
Sasakwa Hill rises above the surrounding plains of the Grumeti Reserve, giving the lodge a panoramic vantage rare in the Serengeti’s mostly flat terrain. The reserve’s private status keeps vehicle density low, and guests staying here generally encounter wildlife sightings with few, if any, other vehicles present.
Game drives explore the wider 350,000-acre concession, where wildlife — including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, eland and Maasai giraffe — moves through woodland and open plain largely undisturbed by the volume of traffic found inside the national park boundary.
Accommodation
Sasakwa offers ten cottages in total, each with a private plunge pool, plus the separately positioned Hillside Suite. The cottage configuration runs from six one-bedroom cottages through two-bedroom, three-bedroom and a four-bedroom option, giving the property genuine flexibility for couples, families and larger multi-generational groups travelling together.
The Hillside Suite sits apart on a secluded section of the hillside, a private retreat for two with its own rim-flow pool, two wooden decks, an in-room “bar-deli,” and a dedicated private game vehicle, field guide and host. It functions as the most exclusive single booking within the property.
Safari Experience
Daily morning and afternoon game drives with a dedicated field guide form the core of a Sasakwa stay, with afternoon drives concluding after dark to reveal the reserve’s nocturnal wildlife. Guided walking safaris are available for guests aged 16 and older, and hot air balloon safaris can be arranged at additional cost.
Beyond wildlife viewing, the lodge offers a noticeably broad range of leisure activities for a safari property — tennis, stargazing, birdwatching, wine tastings, cooking classes, and guided meditation and yoga sessions. A community visit, arranged through the Grumeti Fund, gives guests direct exposure to the conservation and development work the reserve supports in the surrounding region.
When to Visit
Singita Grumeti’s equatorial position keeps the climate fairly stable year-round, making Sasakwa a viable destination in any month. The Green Season, from November to May, brings long warm days interrupted by short downpours, and transforms the reserve into lush grassland. June to October is the traditional migration season, with warm, dry, sunny days and the herds moving through the wider ecosystem.
Practical Information
Singita arranges both scheduled flights and private charters into the Sasakwa airstrip within the Grumeti Reserve. Checked baggage on scheduled flights is limited to 15kg. Flight time from Kilimanjaro International Airport runs approximately 1 hour 15 minutes direct; from Arusha Airport, approximately 1 hour.
The lodge sits in a malaria-risk area, and guests should consult a medical practitioner regarding antimalarial requirements and current vaccination guidance ahead of travel. The lodge operates year-round, with check-in at 13h00 and check-out at 11h00.
