Zanzibar and Islands Lodges

Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia add reef, beach and old-town time to a Tanzania safari. At Oloi Shorua, we recommend a small collection of beach lodges and hotels across the main island, the Pemba and Mnemba reefs and Mafia, and we choose between them on tides, privacy, children’s policies and how long the transfer takes.

The east-coast beaches follow the tide, so swimming depends on the time of day, while the properties we list on the north-west coast say their beaches can be swum from through the day. Pemba is quieter and slower to reach.

What we check before you choose

  • Tides: Baraza’s own information says swimming is only possible at high tide, and the same applies to much of the east coast. We check the tide table for your dates.
  • Events: Kendwa Beach hosts a full-moon party every month, and Sauti za Busara in Stone Town has been moved to 19 to 21 March 2027 to allow for Ramadan and Eid. We flag any event that can disturb your stay.
  • Health and entry: Zanzibar and Pemba are malaria areas, and yellow fever certificate rules depend on where you arrive from. Our quotes include yellow fever and malaria guidance, and we suggest you speak to a travel clinic.
  • Privacy: larger resorts and city hotels are more likely to take group bookings, so we tell privacy-minded clients before they commit.
  • Children: The Palms takes guests aged 16 and over, The Manta Resort does not take children under 7, and Mnemba limits the number of children on the island at any one time.
