Ngala Safari Lodge
Ngala Safari Lodge sits on a private concession inside Kruger National Park itself, part of the Timbavati region run by &Beyond. The name means “lion” in the local Shangaan language, and the surrounding reserve supports several active prides. Ngala was among the first concessions officially incorporated into the Greater Kruger system. As a result, it carries genuinely unfenced traversing rights across one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world.
Design and Setting
Twenty thatched cottages make up the lodge, each with air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows make the most of the sunny Kruger days. Three Family Cottages connect two suites via an internal door, suiting two adults travelling with two children. A large rim-flow pool overlooks the lodge’s waterhole, a natural spot for a sundowner while watching wildlife come to drink. Soft evening lighting, wooden finishes and charming courtyards carry a colonial-style register throughout, with a boma providing a memorable setting for dinner.
Family Fit and Activities
Children of all ages are welcome at Ngala. Those aged five and under, however, cannot join game drives, and children younger than twelve cannot join bush walks. Private vehicles can be pre-booked for families wanting more flexibility, and child-minding services are available at additional cost. The lodge’s own treehouse extends the experience further, with an elevated, safe platform for sleeping under the stars away from the main buildings.
Morning and afternoon game drives explore the reserve’s full Big Five terrain, alongside interpretive bush walks and tracking or photographic safaris. Resident species include blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, impala, hippo, giraffe, duiker and kudu, alongside the lion prides the reserve is named for. A wellness centre and gym round out the facilities for guests wanting downtime between drives. For families, photographers and honeymooners alike, Ngala Safari Lodge pairs eco-conscious construction with the kind of intimacy that comes from a private Kruger concession rather than the busier public park.
