Ngala Tented Camp

Ngala Tented Camp

Ngala Tented Camp sits on the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River, close to Orpen Gate, one of the major gateways into Kruger National Park. The camp shares the same Ngala Private Game Reserve as its sister property, Ngala Safari Lodge, with unfenced borders running into the Greater Kruger system. As a result, wildlife moves freely across the boundary, with elephant, buffalo and giraffe all regularly seen from camp itself.

Tents and Setting

Nine tented suites sit raised on wooden platforms, elevated among the riverside trees to minimise environmental impact. Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub, an outdoor shower, extra-length beds and electric blankets for winter nights. Air conditioning and ceiling fans handle the warmer months. Large gauze screen windows and stone partitions let guests watch the riverbed from inside the tent itself. An elevated sitting room overlooks the same riverbed, with a cosy fireplace for winter evenings and a central bar built around a long, spacious counter.

A contoured lap pool sits surrounded by a timber deck, appearing to merge visually with the dry riverbed beyond it. A wellness centre, in addition, offers spa treatments with views of the Timbavati, and a private airstrip serves guests who’d rather fly in directly. Wi-Fi runs throughout the camp too, tents included, a detail worth knowing for travellers wanting to stay connected.

Family Fit and Dining

Ngala Tented Camp welcomes children aged 12 and older. Guests must be at least 16, however, to join interpretive nature walks or walking safaris. A private 4×4 vehicle for sole use is available at extra cost, subject to availability. This positions the camp as a quieter, more adult-leaning alternative to Ngala Safari Lodge nearby, which welcomes children of all ages.

Dining draws on Pan-African cuisine, blending traditional and ethnic African recipes with a modern presentation. Private lunch platters can be taken on the viewing decks or poolside, and moonlit bush dinners under the African night sky are a regular highlight for honeymooners. A Halaal menu is available at extra cost with prior notice. For travellers wanting a classic tented safari experience, however, paired with genuine romance and strong Big Five viewing close to Kruger’s Orpen Gate, Ngala Tented Camp remains one of the Timbavati’s most distinctive small camps.
