Why Visit Tarangire

Last checked 2 November 2026.

Tarangire National Park lies south of Arusha in northern Tanzania and covers about 2,850 square kilometres. It is known for its large herds of elephants and for the baobab trees that dot the landscape. The Tarangire River, which gives the park its name, is the heart of it.

What Tarangire is known for

  • Elephants. The park has one of the highest densities of elephants in Tanzania.
  • Baobab trees. Ancient baobabs give the park a landscape unlike any other.
  • Dry-season concentrations. From about June to November, large numbers of animals gather near the river.
  • Fewer vehicles. It is quieter than the Serengeti and the crater.

When to go

The dry season is the best time, and the park is at its busiest with wildlife between June and October. See safari in July and August and when to go on safari.

Planning a visit

Tarangire is close to Arusha, so it is a good first stop on the northern circuit, followed by Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Two nights is usually enough.
