Arusha

Most journeys through northern Tanzania begin in Arusha, the gateway to the classic safari circuit. The town sits beneath Mount Meru and offers a relaxed starting point before heading into the national parks. Many of our guests spend a night here either side of their safari, easing the transition between international travel and the bush. Coffee estates and gardens surround several of the properties, giving Arusha its own quiet character distinct from the parks beyond it.

Ngorongoro Safari Lodges

The Ngorongoro Crater is a vast volcanic caldera sheltering an extraordinary concentration of wildlife within its walls. Lion, elephant, black rhino, buffalo and large numbers of plains game are regularly encountered on the crater floor. Among Tanzania’s luxury safari lodges, the properties on this rim offer some of the most reliable game viewing anywhere on the continent, since the crater’s wildlife rarely leaves its contained ecosystem. Several lodges sit directly on the rim itself, while others, including Gibb’s Farm and The Manor at Ngorongoro, occupy the gentler farmland of nearby Karatu, trading a few minutes’ drive for a genuinely different setting.

Tarangire

Tarangire National Park draws exceptional concentrations of wildlife during the dry season, particularly around the Tarangire River, the area’s only reliable water source once the rains stop. Immense elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and strong predator numbers define the experience. The park carries noticeably fewer visitors than the Serengeti, making it a quieter addition for travellers who’ve already seen the more famous parks, and a genuinely worthwhile stop even for first-time visitors with a few extra days.

Serengeti Safari Lodges

The Serengeti ecosystem supports one of the highest predator concentrations in Africa, alongside the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. Our Serengeti safari lodges collection is best understood through its distinct zones, each relevant at different times of year depending on where the herds currently are. Travellers building a longer itinerary often combine two zones within a single Serengeti stay, moving between properties as the migration shifts.

Ndutu and the Southern Plains

Home to the wildebeest calving season between December and March, when predator activity intensifies around the newborn herds.

Central Serengeti

Strong resident game viewing year-round, anchored by the Seronera Valley and Moru Kopjes, independent of the migration’s exact position.

Grumeti and the Western Corridor

Strong wildlife viewing along the Grumeti River, with consistently lower visitor density than the north.

The North: Klein’s, Lobo and the Mara River

The migration’s most dramatic chapter, with river crossings between July and October drawing travellers from across the world.

Southern Tanzania: Ruaha and Nyerere

Southern Tanzania offers a more remote and adventurous safari experience than the northern circuit, with fewer visitors and vast wilderness areas. Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest, carries a genuine sense of remoteness, with rugged landscapes and substantial predator populations rarely encountered elsewhere in the country. Nyerere National Park, formerly the Selous Game Reserve, adds boat safaris along its rivers and lakes alongside conventional game drives, a genuinely different way to experience Big Five wildlife. Together, they remain among the least visited and most rewarding parts of the continent, suited to travellers who’ve already covered the northern circuit and want something quieter.
